With the average Australian aquatic centre pool being built in 1968, 500 (40%) of the public pools will reach the end of their functional lifespan by 2030. The State of Aquatic Facilities Infrastructure in Australia report by Royal Life Saving Australia predicts that $8 billion will need to be invested in the replacement of these pools. There is concern that this cost will lead to a number of Councils and Shires having to consider closing their pools for safety and cost reasons, even with the understanding of the health, social and economic benefits a pool offers community members. This will also have an effect on employment.
