Cultural Institutions in Western Australia

The cultural sector includes heritage, museums, public and commercial galleries, and arts centres and organisations. Depending on the size and location of the institution, the workforce can be incredibly diverse, ranging from the complex teams found at our major museums and galleries, to the extensive volunteer workforce that are often single-handedly responsible for our local, remote and regional institutions. As well as collections managers and curators, the cultural sector workforce includes arts advocates, managers and administrators; scientists and subject experts; visitor and community engagement staff; functions, events, retail, catering, ticketing and programming specialists; installation teams; education teams; and a host of supporting departments from human resources through IT, media, marketing and security.

Our galleries, museums and arts centres are the guardians of our shared stories. The standard of our cultural institutions and their work speaks to the vibrancy and liveability of our cities and regions. They reflect our own image back to us and project our narrative to the world, helping visitors make sense of and engage with Western Australia. FutureNow is working with the sector to explore skills needs and improve pathways into industry.

Training and Education

Graduates find their way into Western Australia's museums, galleries and arts institutions in a variety of ways. Common pathways include internships linked to post-graduate studies in areas such as anthropology, sociology, heritage studies or Indigenous history.

FutureNow recently worked with industry to advocate for and advise on the development of a suite of vocational qualification specialisations to service the museums and galleries sectors. This resulted in significant changes to the Certificates III and IV in Arts and Cultural Administration, and Diploma of Arts and Cultural Management.
