Event Management in Western Australia

Events are society’s means of marking an occasion or celebration and appeal to people’s desire for community connectedness as well as sharing one-off experiences with one another. As an industry, Events face the demands of seamless organisation, coordination and implementation of services for the occasions when groups of people gather. 

​The industry can be segmented according to purpose of the event and is broadly divided into three categories:

     1.    Business Events such as meetings, conferences and exhibitions;
     2.   Community or Cultural Events such as sport, food & wine, live performance or festivals; and
     3.   Functions such as weddings, balls, banquets and dinners.

Training and Education

Western Australians have access to a range of training and education opportunities in the Events sector, from secondary schools, through to vocational and higher education providers such as Edith Cowan University and Curtin University.
 FutureNow works with stakeholders across the training and education landscape, and has a formal role to play in the development of vocational education and training to meet industry needs.

Jobs and Skills Council
Service and Creative Skills Australia (SaCSA) is the Jobs and Skills Council for the  Events, Tourism and Hospitality sectors. SaCSA will identify skills and workforce needs for the event sector, map career pathways across education sectors, develop contemporary VET training products, support collaboration between industry and training providers to improve training and assessment practice, and act as a source of intelligence on issues affecting the industry. SaCSA works closely with Jobs and Skills Australia, drawing on its workforce analysis and projections to plan for their industry sector and creating a consistent approach to addressing skill gaps.

​SIT  Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package

Training package qualifications are developed through a process of national consultation with industry. They are occupational skills standards against which training delivery and assessment of competency can take place. FutureNow works with our industry partners across Western Australia to provide current industry advice that informs the development or review of new event management training package products.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

​Apprenticeships and traineeships provide a way to combine training with a job, enabling the student to work towards a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a wage. The following table shows traineeships linked to Events qualifications within the SIT – Tourism, Travel and Hospitality and CUA – Creative Arts and Culture Training Packages, as of 1 December 2017.

VET for Secondary Students

FutureNow works with industry to provide current advice on the suitability of vocational Events qualifications for delivery to secondary students. This advice is collated and updated annually into the VET Qualifications Register for Secondary Students.

Year 9 Career Taster Program
The Career Taster Program enables Western Australia’s Year 9 students to explore the stages of early career discovery and study pathways, helping them to make informed decisions about their subject selections in Years 10, 11 and 12. The program supports students to become ‘career curious’ and extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work.

Industry Partners 

FutureNow works closely with our industry partners in the Events Industry to examine current trends in the sector and identify opportunities to promote and support its workforce. Many maintain representation on our Board and/or our Event Industry Advisory Network.
