Media and Publishing in Western Australia

Media and Publishing include; news publishing and journalism, book and periodical publishing, and writing including fiction and non-fiction writing, and literary, academic, technical and social media writing. We live in the ‘content era’, and demand for the skills and services of this workforce are great. The high drama of our shared online communities and explosion of poor quality content highlight the vital contribution of our professional writers and editors in verifying the authenticity of information, curating content and providing considered perspectives on our shared challenges.

Evolving technology and consumer demands have driven an expanding sector skill set that incorporates small business management and intellectual property knowledge, writing, editing, web editing, presenting to camera, filming and film editing and consumer data analytics. In this context, the importance of current, rigorous training and education products for the sector becomes evident. FutureNow works with our partners across the media and publishing sectors to examine current trends and identify opportunities to promote and support the media and publishing workforce.

Training and Education

Most Western Australian Universities offer Bachelor level qualifications in writing and journalism, and in 2020 a suite of vocational qualifications in professional writing and editing were developed to service the publishing sector for the first time.
