Sport in Western Australia

Sport is an exciting industry playing a vital role in enhancing physical and mental health, a sense of belonging and achievement, social inclusion and fun. 

Whilst sport is heavily
reliant on volunteers, there are professional roles such as athlete, sports coach, umpire, administrator, leader and lecturer available. There is also a growing field of aligned professions such as sports scientist, sports psychologist and sports nutritionist. As well as the developing field of sport and technology professions investigating AI and sport, E-sports and wearable technology to improve high performance.  

The Western Australian peak sporting association is SportWest.

Training and Education

 
​There are a range of training and qualification options delivered in Western Australian to gain employment in the sports industry through specialist school programs, TAFEs, registered training organisations, universities and sport specific codes.


FutureNow works with stakeholders across the training and education landscape, and has a formal role to play in the development of vocational education and training to meet industry needs. This includes working with the newly established Jobs and Skills Council for the Sport and Recreation sector - HumanAbility.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

​Apprenticeships and traineeships provide a way to combine training with a job, enabling the student to work towards a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a wage. A number of sport qualifications may be completed as a traineeship.

​VET Delivered to Secondary Students

FutureNow works with industry to provide current advice on the suitability of vocational sport qualifications for delivery to secondary students. This advice is collated and updated annually into the VET  Qualifications Register for Secondary Students by the Department of Training and Workforce Development.

​Western Australian Jobs, Education and Training survey (WAJET)
FutureNow conducts research and gathers industry feedback on the fitness sectors' workforce development and skill needs.  An analysis of desktop research, yearly industry and education stakeholder engagement and annual survey data are used to develop an annual response for the Western Australian government WAJET survey.

Year 9 Career Taster Program
The Career Taster Program enables Western Australia’s Year 9 students to explore the stages of early career discovery and study pathways, helping them make informed decisions about their subject selections in Years 10, 11 and 12. The program supports students to become ‘career curious’ and extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work.
