Racing and Equine in Western Australia

The Racing and Equine industry incorporates occupations such as jockey, track rider, farrier and stablehand. Many of these traditional roles are still available today and are an important part of the racing community and management of horses. 

Racing and Wagering Western Australia work together with a Registered Training Organisation to provide the jockey apprenticeship training program. The Western Australian Farriers Association are the peak Farriery association body in Western Australia. Racing WA provide information about WA thoroughbred racing.

Training and Education

​Whilst some racing and equine jobs offer on the job training there are a range of training and qualification options delivered in Western Australian to gain employment in the racing and equine industry through specialist agriculture colleges, registered training organisations and private companies. 

FutureNow works with stakeholders across the training and education landscape, and has a formal role to play in the development of vocational education and training to meet industry needs. This includes working with Racing and Wagering WA and  the newly established Jobs and Skills Council for the Racing and Equine sector - Skills Insight.

Case Study

Apprenticeships and Traineeships​
Apprenticeships are the key training method to becoming a qualified jockey and farrier. Providing a way to combine training with a job, enabling the student to work towards a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a wage. For jockey's this is an essential requirement however it is not for a farrier.

VET Delivered to Secondary Students

FutureNow works with industry to provide current advice on the suitability of vocational fitness qualifications for delivery to secondary students. This advice is collated and updated annually into the VET Qualifications Register for Secondary Students by the Department of Training and Workforce Development

Western Australian Jobs, Education and Training survey (WAJET) ​
FutureNow conducts research and gathers industry feedback on the racing and equine sectors' workforce development and skill needs.  An analysis of desktop research, yearly industry and education stakeholder engagement and annual survey data are used to develop an annual response for the Western Australian government WAJET survey. 

FutureNow are continually seeking input from industry and education providers and welcome any thoughts and ideas you have in relation to workforce development and education for the racing and equine sector.
