Technology

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industries are broad and the workforce reaches into every sector. Study areas can include programming, networking and telecommunications, security, digital media, games and interactive, web and application-based technologies, systems analysis and design, geo-spatial and several more. Workers of the future across all industries will need to marry technological skills with interpersonal communications savvy, and the ICT sector is leading the charge in delivering the multi-skilled workforce that will underpin our diversified economy.

Information communications Technology in WA Today

Western Australia has earned its place on the global tech stage, with standout projects like Canva and Moodle originating here, our nascent Digital Games sector winning major contracts, and the world’s largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array, preparing to deliver unprecedented volumes of data from the Murchison through the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre at Curtin. FutureNow works closely with our industry partners to examine current trends in the Information Communications Technology sector and identify opportunities to promote and support the ICT and broader workforce.

Current Projects

FutureNow is collaborating with our industry partners to examine potential applications for Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies across the Creative Industries. Through facilitating links between our stakeholders in the Information and Communications Technology, and Creative Industries, FutureNow is working to boost the capacity of creative and cultural organisations in Western Australia to access new audiences and generate new income streams.

Training and Education

Western Australians have access to an excellent range of rigorous Information Communications Technology training and education opportunities, including North Metropolitan TAFE’s renowned Digital Games and Virtual Technology offerings, and South Metropolitan TAFE’s industry-linked Networking, Programming and Cybersecurity qualifications. A host of private providers offer a diverse range of short accredited and non-accredited courses, and Edith Cowan University was recently announced as a lead partner of the new national Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre.

​ICT Information Communication Technologies Training Package

Training package qualifications are developed through a process of national consultation with industry. They are occupational skills standards against which training delivery and assessment of competency can take place. FutureNow works with our industry partners across Western Australia to provide current industry advice into the development of new Information Communications Technology training package products.

Current Information Communications Technology Training Projects

PwC Skills for Australia and the ICT Industry Reference Committee have submitted to the Australian Industry Skills Committee a review of a number of existing qualifications within the ICT Information Communications Technology Training Package. The objective of this project was to review the suitability of a number of qualifications that may not be fit for purpose within the ICT Training Package, and to determine what changes or additions can be made to better meet the needs of industry.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

​Apprenticeships and traineeships provide a way to combine training with a job, enabling the student to work towards a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a wage. A number of Information Communications Technology qualifications may be completed as a traineeship.

​Vocational Education in Schools

FutureNow works with industry to provide current advice on the suitability of vocational Information Communications Technology qualifications for delivery in schools. This advice is collated and updated annually into the VET in Schools Register by the Department of Training and Workforce Development.
