Taking effect on 1 July 2017, the 40 per cent reduction in government departments (moving from 41 to 25) and 20 per cent cost reduction in the 521 Senior Executive Service will deliver multi-million-dollar cost savings across government to assist with budget repair.
The first round of structural changes to the public sector has been announced, amalgamating 36 agencies into 12 new departments and incorporating a major reshuffle of agency heads.
Although a number of departments will remain the same, others will have some changes to their functions or focus. Among these is the Department of Training and Workforce Development which will be instructed to undertake significant internal reform and more strongly align its training service provision to industry needs.
