RTR FM – The Sound Alternative is one of Perth’s most diverse and respected community radio broadcasters. RTR’s programs broadcast live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from their studios in Mt Lawley and are presented by over 200 volunteers, who are supported and trained by RTR’s core staff of 10 dedicated managers, producers and broadcasters. Together the RTR team produce an impressive range of content, including their dynamic website which offers live streaming, archive programs for download, and images of program guests, hosts and more.
RTR’s community focus is also reflected in their funding structure – they are one of the few radio stations which rely so heavily on community funding via individual subscriptions, sponsorships, and ticket sales from their many local music events throughout the year.
On Wed 17 Dec RTR invited all their volunteer contributors to a ‘big thank-you for 2013 xmas BBQ’, where both the station’s long-time and new-faces presenters shared a beverage and a sausage to wrap up another strong year for the station. FutureNow Creative Industries Project Manager Jo Pickup attended the event, checking-in with some of WA’s aspiring media professionals (many of whom go on to work for WA’s major media organisations such as the ABC). While these volunteer broadcasters are always enthusiastic about their (unpaid) opportunities at RTR, the paid work media environment remains challenging, as media platforms continue to be affected by new technologies and profit margins for some traditional media outlets continue to suffer.
