Funding for Tourism Australia has largely been maintained over the four-year budget period. However, the issue of the backpacker tax has left the tourism industry disappointed. If imposed, backpackers will be required from 1 July 2016 to pay 32.5% on all earnings, which industry leaders believe will deter backpackers from visiting Australia. According to Tourism Council of Western Australia, 38,000 Working Holiday makers visit Western Australia each year, spending approximately $265 million.
