Premier Mark McGowan has visited the Wheatbelt region to announce a number of important community grants in support of developing the next generation of regional sporting champions. The Premier visited a cricket training camp in Northam, one of five Wheatbelt-based AFL, cricket, hockey and netball clubs that will share in nearly $60,000 worth of grants. This round is the first to be awarded as part of the 2018-19 Regional Grants Scheme, with successful applicants from other regions to be announced in the near future. Read more. Tennis royalty Serena Williams is confirmed for the 2019 Mastercard Hopman Cup, to run from December 29, 2018 to January 5, 2019 at the RAC Arena. The 23-time Grand Slam winner will represent the United States of America and will face current world No.2 Roger Federer in the mixed teams tournament, as part of one of the strongest line-ups in the event's 31-year history. More here. The Australian Sports Commission has outlined a vision for sport in Australia in a new report titled Sport 2030. The report brings together the knowledge and insight of many people from across the sporting sector and the general public who provided submissions, attended consultation sessions and contributed ideas. Sport 2030 has four key priority areas which will, when fully implemented, create a platform for sporting success through to 2030 and beyond, and will help to ensure Australia is the world’s most active and healthy nation. Outdoors October began on 1 October, signalling a month-long celebration of outdoor active recreation encouraging Western Australians of all ages to get outside, be active and take in the natural world around them. Outdoors October celebrates WA's wonderful natural landscape, reminding people of the huge range of outdoor activities on offer - from hiking and riding, to snorkelling and camping. Activities are planned all over the State to mark Outdoors October with many of the activities free, family friendly and designed for beginners. The Great Southern Centre for Outdoor Recreation Excellence (GSCORE) has released its Annual Report for 2017-18. The report highlights the Centre’s impressive achievements in its first year of operation and provides a comprehensive dashboard on progress towards 2020 goals. Outlined in the report are GSCORE’s vision for the region, an account of progress against 2020 targets, and detailed descriptions of activities in the organisation’s six core areas of operation – promotion, business support, training, advocacy, research, and product development.
